My name is Walter Virgil and this is ESS Success.

ESS Success is a platform where I’m giving you guys what I think are pretty cool tips to be able to help you along your journey of connecting with your next great job opportunity.

This week, I want to talk about how to dress for a job interview.

I think first of all, it’s important to recognize what you’re interviewing for, and I share this with guys all the time. The number one thing is you should be clean and you should be neat, okay?

If you’re a construction worker, I wouldn’t advise you to show up looking like me: shirt, tie, bop bop bop bop. For some of you guys, it might be appropriate for you guys to go in with some clean work pants -- some clean Dickies or Carhartt pants -- with some good work boots -- and they’re clean -- and a nice polo that fits you well, tucked in with a good belt.

If you’re going for something that requires you to be in an office, then no, yes -- you need to wear a good shirt. For the guys, maybe a tie, a good pair of slacks. Ladies: a nice shirt, long sleeves.

I think the most important thing is that you want to be modest; you actually want to cover up anything that can be revealing and you want to be neat. You want your clothes to be ironed, you want them to be pressed, and you want them to fit you. You don’t want to look like you’re wearing your big brother’s shirt or your big brother’s coat or your big brother’s pants, and you also don’t want to look like you’re wearing your little brother or little sister’s stuff either. You don’t want it to be too tight to where it’s… y’know, a little inappropriate.

You want to be well-covered, you want to be nice, you want to be neat, you want to be clean, you want to smell clean. It’s possible for you to be clean and not smell clean. You can be clean, but your clothes may not. I’m not trying to be funny, not trying to embarrass anybody, but you want to do a check. You want to check yourself, you want to check your clothes, make sure they’re clean and they smell good.

And just being able to follow those tips will be able to ensure that you’re making the best possible impression. You want to dress well for the occasion. You want to look like you’re somebody that already has the job working for that company.

I hope that kind of, sort of made sense.
